534 faye throneberry

Type 2 variation on 1959 Topps 534 Faye Throneberry.  In the bottom right hand border, magenta background border lines extend down and to the right.  There is also a variation on this card where lines in yellow extend down and to the right.  This variation occurs on approximately 30% of examples according to a survey of cards.

This card is an example of why knowing the position of cards on the original sheet is important, as the position of 534 Faye Throneberry is in the lower right corner.

78 pedro ramos

The more well known variation on 1959 Topps 78 Pedro Ramos is the one where a missing corner of the magenta print leaves the upper left hand corner of the card yellow.  On this Type 1 variation, a tiny smudge of magenta looks like a beauty mark above Ramos’ upper lip.  I have not observed the two variations to both appear on the same card.  This variation occurs on approximately 20% of examples according to a survey of cards.

31 ken lehman

The card for 1959 Topps 31 Ken Lehman is complicated when it comes to variations.  From my observations, there are three different possibilities.  The differences appear in the “n” in the name “lehman” and a broken horizontal line that appears to be part of the autograph that is above and above and to the left of “Ken” signature.  Both variations are type 2.

  • 60% of cards have blue shading of the “n” in “lehman”.
  • 40% have normal clean white (no blue shading) in the “n” of “lehman”.
  • 70% of cards have a broken horizontal line that appears to be part of the autograph that is above and above and to the left of “Ken” signature.
  • 30% have no broken line over “Ken” in the autograph.

The most common card:  Blue shading of “n" in “lehman”.  Broken line over “Ken” in the autograph.  This variation occurs on approximately 60% of examples according to a survey of cards.

429 bobby thomson

Type 1 variation on 1959 Topps 429 Bobby Thompson.  This is an interesting variation to say the least.  At first, I thought all copies of the card had a small blue line in the right border, to the right of the portrait.  However, some examples do not visibly appear to have the line.  Closer inspection under magnification reveals that there is evidence of the line, it just happens to be extremely faint.  Cards without a line are much less common than those with a line.  Because of its location, off center cards will have varying amounts of the line present.

The card immediately to the right of 429 Bobby Thomson on the original sheet is 377 Johnny Antonelli. Though the blue line is predominantly on the Thomson card, it spans the border between it and Antonelli.  A slight shift of the centering of Antonelli to the right will put a substantial amount of the mark in the left border, to the left of the portrait.
