Type 3 variations on 1959 Topps 181 Bob Porterfield and 198 Jim Davenport.  Across the two cards, the scratch extends for a total of approximately 53mm.

On the back of the card, starting with 181 Bob Porterfield, the scratch in green extends for 27mm from between the “YEAR” and “TEAM” headings in the record box, to just touching the “3” in “1953”, through the “r” in “Major”, and to the bottom border.  The card immediately to the right of 181 Bob Porterfield on the original sheet is 198 Jim Davenport.  On 198 Jim Davenport, the scratch continues 26 mm from the top border, through the “8” of the number “198”, and through the first three lines of the story.

198 jim davenport

Type 3 variation on 1959 Topps 198 Jim Davenport.  On the back of the card, there is a scratch in green that extends for 26mm from the top border, through the “8” of the number “198”, and through the first three lines of the story.  This variety is less well known than it’s counterpart.

The card immediately to the left of 198 Jim Davenport on the original sheet is 181 Bob Porterfield.  On 181 Bob Porterfield, the scratch continues from the bottom border, through the “r” in “Major”, to just touching the “3” in “1953”, and ending between the “YEAR” and “TEAM” headings in the record box.

Because it appears on the back of the card, it is difficult to get an accurate idea of the frequency of this variation.  From a survey of examples, this variation appears on approximately 20% of cards.  The expectation would be that the frequency would be the same as 181 Bob Porterfield.

An interesting aspect of this card is that there is a “tell” on the front that leads to the scratch on the back.  It is a small, hook shaped black line in the top border above and left of the “m” in the name “jim”.  I have not seen a card with the scratch on the back that did not have the hook on the front.

The card immediately to the right of 181 Bob Porterfield on the original sheet is 198 Jim Davenport.  On 198 Jim Davenport, the scratch continues from the top border, through the “8” of the number “198”, and through the first three lines of the story.

Because there is a demand for this card as a variety and because it appears on the back of the card, it is difficult to get an accurate idea of the frequency of this variation.  From a survey of examples, this variation appears on approximately 20% of cards.  The expectation would be that the frequency would be the same as 198 Jim Davenport.

178 ruben amaro

Type 1 variation on 1959 Topps 178 Ruben Amaro.  There is a small red dot and two associated red marks in the right border, to the right of where the background meets the portrait.  The card must be shifted substantially off center to the left for this variation to be found on the Amaro card.  Because the Amaro card is usually found shifted off center to the right, the coincidence of the variation and the shift is uncommon.

The card immediately to the right of 178 Ruben Amaro on the original sheet is 150 Stan Musial.  On 150 Stan Musial, the identical variation is found in the left border.
