316A ralph lumenti - with option statement

316 Ralph Lumenti is the first of five cards in the 1959 Topps set that either have or do not have a statement on the back indicating a trade or option situation.  The varieties without the statement are much more rare than those with the statement.  Here is 1959 Topps 316B Ralph Lumenti – no option statement.

For the Lumenti variation, the statement reads, “Optioned to Chattanooga in March 1959.”  It is located underneath the cartoon.

40C warren spahn - born in 1921

Warren Spahn was born on April 23, 1921.  Most of the 1959 Topps cards issued have him as being born on that date (4/23/21) on the back in his bio.

40 Warren Spahn was originally issued with a 1931 birthdate (the 40A card).  Topps then “corrected” the card to the “3 obscured” variety (the 40B card).  It was later corrected again to the 1921 birthdate (the 40C card).  Spahn’s stature contributed to Topps wanting to make his card right.

Warren Spahn was born on April 23, 1921.  Most of the 1959 Topps cards issued have him as being born on that date (4/23/21) on the back in his bio.

On the back in the bio box, the colon in “HT: 6’” is missing its bottom element.  Is this another variety?  I have not seen this on another card, so it is awaiting confirmation.

40A warren spahn - born in 1931

Warren Spahn was born on April 23, 1921.  Most of the 1959 Topps cards issued have him as being born on that date (4/23/21) on the back in his bio.

On the card below, note the blue line in the border to the right of the portrait.  This is a constant variety that can be found on all three birthdate versions of the card.  As far as I know, the red mark on Spahn’s chin is present on every card.

This card, without the well formed “3” above, I speculate to be part of the effort to obscure the numeral.

White backs and gray backs

One of the most readily apparent varieties on 1959 Topps cards – and many other Topps cards of the era – has to do with the card stock that the cards are printed on.  Some card series were printed on a cream-colored card stock:  1-110, 199-286, 375-440, and 507-572.  These cards are often called “white backs.”  Cards 507-572 use a red and black color scheme instead of the red and green format employed for the rest of the set.

Some card series were printed on a duller and darker gray-colored card stock: 111-198, 199-286, 287-374, and 441-506.  These cards are often called “gray backs.”

Cards 199-286 were printed with both white and gray backs.  While the card stock varieties are not part of the master set, they are sometimes identified separately in guidebooks.  The gray back cards are more scarce than their white back counterparts but there is seldom a price premium.  I am giving a Type 3 designation to these 88 cards due to the substantial difference in appearance between the white and gray backs.

Terminology

One of the more frustrating parts of collecting varieties is checking cards to see if you have one or not.  Sometimes they really are hard to find.  Below is a glossary of terms I will use to identify the location of a variety on a card.

What constitutes a variety?

Three questions must be satisfied with a “yes” answer to establish what might seem to be a variety as actually being a variety.

Is it constant? Does the variety appear the same on every card?

Is it repeatable?  Can the variety be confirmed by finding it on more than one card?

Is it limited?  If the “variety” occurs on every example of a card, it isn’t really a variety.

Here are two examples of “varieties” that are not varieties:

139 Ed Sadowski is a card that has always brought a smile to my face.  The silhouette of each Rookie Star player against the red, white, and blue striped background gave these cards a great look.  But someone neglected to cut out the grass between Ed’s left arm and his body.  To the best of my knowledge this graphical mistake was never fixed.  There are no cards out there that have blue bar instead of green grass as the background.

1959 Topps 139 ed sadowski

103 Billy Goodman is more subtle.  In the “C” of “H-CAG” of “CHICAGO” on his front jersey, there is a pronounced red splotch.  As far as I have found, this mark is present on every card.  It may be interesting insofar as it’s not supposed to be there, but it is not a variety.

1959 Topps 103 billy goodman

Many varieties do not command a price premium, even though they may be scarce.  Variety hunting seems to represent an overlooked part of the card collecting hobby, but is definitely a challenging one that takes a sharp eye and plenty of patience.

Below is the scale I’m going to use to indicate how impactful a variety is on a card:

Type 1 – A true flyspeck variety. Generally nothing more than a dot of color, not readily visible.

Type 2 – A moderate variety. Recognizable, and more readily visible than a Type 1.

Type 3 – A major variety. Pronounced, easily recognizable and having significant visual impact on the card.

Type 4 – A variety that has been made a master set component.

The 1959 Topps baseball card set includes 572 standard size cards, each measuring 2½” by 3½”.  The subsets for the 1959 Topps baseball cards are Sporting News Rookie Stars (116-146), Baseball Thrills (461-470), and Sporting News All-Stars (551-572).  There are 16 team cards with checklists on the back and 17 other multi-player cards.  1-110 were printed on a cream-colored card stock (sometimes called “white backs”), 111-198 were printed on a duller gray card stock (“gray backs”), 199-286 were printed with both white and gray backs, 287-374 were printed with gray backs, 375-440 were printed with white backs, 441-506 were printed with gray backs. The high number series starts with 507.  The reverse design on these cards uses a red and black color scheme instead of the red and green format employed for the rest of the set. 507-572 were printed with white backs.

The master set features three versions of 40 Spahn birthdates, five cards (316 Lumenti, 321 Giallombardo, 322 Hanebrink, 336 Loes, and 362 Nichols) having or not having a statement about being optioned or traded, and three versions of 416 Sullivan copyright statements.
